DIGGING A LITTLE DEEPER;;
Appearance: Gus is an average size for a male wolf. He has a standard amount of muscle, and a fairly lithe build. His coat is a swirling mix of white, tan, brown, gray and black. His legs and undersides and primarily white with accents of other colors, mixing into grays and browns as you move higher on his body, until reaching the black saddle of guard hairs that runs the length of his spine and stretches out onto his tail. His golden-brown eyes are settled into the dark gray mask on his face, and look down upon a mostly brown snout that fades to a white chin and throat area. His black saddle reaches under his neck, forming a sort of black necklace on his chest area.
Personality: Gus is an optimistic character, and often tries to find the best of things even in the worst situations. He is fairly intellectual and loves to both talk and speak his mind with others. He has a playful, friendly, and outgoing attitude towards those he considers friends and family and he often shows genuine concern when he knows someone is hurt. He is very open-minded, willing to lend an ear, and many often look to him for the same mental and emotional guidance they would a parental figure. Though he tends to prefer a peaceful solution to a problem, he is capable of standing his own ground and fighting for those he cares about. Though seemingly nonviolent amongst wolves, his favorite activity is hunting and he won’t hesitate to volunteer his time to feed another. His passive nature amongst others can still leave him with anger, upset, or otherwise emotional turmoil and rather than take this out on his packmates, he considers hunting to be a release of all his negative emotions.
History: Gus was born in the Yellowstone State Park as his family’s first generation of truly wild wolves. Both of his parents had been raised by man in captivity, than released into the park in an effort to reintroduce wolves to Yellowstone permanently. His parents had met in captivity, and stayed together after they had been turned loose into the forest. They spent their first year together as companions, and even found another pair of wolves to join them in their travels. Eventually, the four deemed themselves as a pack, with Gus’ parents being the alpha pair. They were both in their seventh year of life before they bore their first litter, the firstborn being their only son, Gus, and the three others being all female.
His life as a pup was fairly normal. He loved to play with his sisters and the adult members of the pack and spent as much time as he was allowed outside of their den. His father and the other two packmates hunted and brought food to the pups regularly, as the deer were plentiful in this new region. When they’d all grown into their bodies and had learned the basics of following scents and stalking, they were taken out on their first hunt with their parents. The hunt was successful in that it ended with a feast, but Gus’ youngest sister had taken a hoof to her skull and perished shortly after from the injury. This was the first truly negative thing that had happened in the young wolf’s life and his sisters took the loss of their littermate hard. Though upset himself, Gus hated seeing his siblings so upset and took it upon himself to lift the mood in the den whenever he could. His optimistic nature grew out of trying to make his siblings see past the loss of their youngest sister.
After reaching their second year of life, the pups were finally deemed worthy of a place in the ranks. Gus was appointed a hunter, and his sisters were titled as scouts. They were all happy in this new hierarchy, but his oldest sister dreamed of something better. After a farewell to his parents and siblings, she left the pack. Not long after her departure, one of the other packmates saw a weakness in the aging alphas and decided to overthrow Gus’ father. A hostile fight broke out, and Gus’ father was removed from his rank of alpha. As the day went on, an infection found itself in his wounds, and Gus’ father was ultimately killed by the infection. His mother, upset by the loss of her mate, wished Gus and his remaining sister farewell before leaving the area to never be seen again.
Gus was slightly depressed by the loss of both of his parents and one sister in such a short time, and he offered the idea to his remaining sister that they leave the pack and find another place to call home. At first, his sister thought it was a great idea. They planned to leave the very next day, but before their departure, the new alpha had approached his sister and asked her to stand at his side as the new alphess of the pack. Now torn between leaving with her brother and remaining to be part of an alpha pair, his sister was overwhelmed with emotions. He really wanted to leave the pack as her mother and sister had, but the thought of being an alpha wolf held her heart so tightly. Not wanting her to worry about making a life-changing decision, Gus decided to leave without her. In the dead of the night, he snuck away from the pack and left his sister behind to hopefully become an alpha and follow her own dreams. Gus silently wished her the best, and struck out on his own into the heart of Yellowstone.
